At the NRH Sports Championships
What an incredible few days!
It was like a smaller scale Paralympics. It was so much fun and so well organised.
The National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) Sports Championships provides patients with a Spinal Cord Injury, Acquired Brain Injury including Stroke, and Limb Absence the opportunity to take part in a range of competitive events, and also to try out other sports that may interest them from boccia, to table tennis, canoeing, wheelchair basketball, rugby and swimming. There's a sport, if not more than one, for everyone up there.
Personally, I was only ever an outpatient at the NRH. It was years ago aswell. I have such fond memories of doing their summer camps when I was in fifth and sixth class. There was a group of about 6 or 7 of us and we used to have mighty craic. We would go bowling, to the zoo, play pool, do art, lots of sports... it was such a highlight for me every year. It was as fantastic to go back as a well post primary school girl!
I'm so delighted that I got involved in the Sports Champs this year, my only regret is that I didn't do so sooner. If you are in a position to volunteer at the NRH in any capacity, definitely do. It's an incredible place to be with such a strong sense of community. The work they do is truly brilliant.
