Summer recap from Able Active

A summary of recent events and activities from the Able Active team.

Roscommon Sports Partnership demonstrating accessible bicycles in Strokestown Park

We hope the summer has been treating you well. We have been a bit quieter on the online front but have been very busy behind-the-scenes and just wanted to take this opportunity to catch you up on a bit of what’s been going on. We’re working hard to bring you, our users and community additional tailor made features that you have asked to see in the app… more on that in the very near future! It’s quite a significant add-on that will change the way how both ourselves, the team here at Able Active, and yourselves plan and manage events, activities & outings.

Separately, a couple of events worth mentioning that we attended over the summer so far have been with our partners at the Shamrock Squads Steps to Wellness event in the lovely Strokestown Park, Roscommon. Steps to Wellness was a relaxed, inclusive outdoor event filled with gentle activities and friendly supports, a day we were delighted to be a part of. It was a roaring success with over 200 happy, engaged and well catered for attendees. Shamrock Squad cofounder, Alina is one of our most recently featured podcast guests, if you want to go back and take a listen to the episode, it’s definitely worth your time.

In addition, you can find more of our podcasts from series one which has quite a range and variety of topics and speakers listed on our website.

We’re taking a scheduled break on podcast recording now that we have season one wrapped up. There’s hopefully enough episodes online to keep you busy listening until we come back with season two in a few short months… if you’d like to be a guest for season two or if there’s any topics you’d like us to explore, please just let us know.

Another event worth highlighting, again hosted by one of our partners, was the Active Disability Ireland Xcessible Awards which happened earlier in the summer. For anyone unfamiliar with the Xcessible Programme it is an inclusive programme designed for National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) and Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs) to positively and meaningfully provide opportunities for people with disabilities to take part in sport and physical activity. The award ceremony celebrated the fantastic achievements of the NGB’s and LSP’s who have achieved an award on the Xcessible Programme to date. The team at Active Disability Ireland compiled a lovely video of the day, be sure to give it a watch and see if you can spot a very familiar face doing a piece to camera!

Last, but definitely not least! You may remember earlier in the year Sarah won a five day guided expedition to Mount Toubkal, Morocco at the Outsider Awards… a refresher link for those who don’t recall, but she’s been training hard for the final run in before she heads off. Over the August bank holiday she did a simulation of the trip and distance which although challenging she completed it 🏆 Fingers crossed she’ll be as successful for the real deal. She’ll be providing you with a full run down on the trip upon her return via blog post so yet another thing for you to keep your eyes peeled for.

There’s lots of exciting updates on a range of fronts coming over the next few weeks/months. Can’t wait to share with you all.
